FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Tribal Bellydance?

Tribal Bellydance is a modern fusion dance inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain and India. It emerged from the USA in the late 1980’s and does not represent any particular culture/region. It is mostly danced in a group format and dancers move in an improvised (versus choreographed) way. To dance improvisationally there are leaders and followers that learn a vocabulary of moves, long combinations and formations. This provides a fresh and exciting connection and synchronicity amongst the dancers. It is much more than steps!  It’s a lifestyle with community connections locally, interstate, throughout Australia and across the world.  Everywhere you go you will find a tribal sister that you can connect with.

What is Global Caravan Tribal Bellydance format?

Developed by Paulette Ree’s Denis, Global Caravan Tribal Bellydance (also referred to Global Caravan Dance) is a structured format of Tribal Bellydance.  There is an abundant list of moves, exciting combinations and formations.  Dancers can dive deep into this format through Paulette’s intensive certification program called ‘Collective Soul’, while teachers continue to enhance their skills through the accredited Teacher Training intensives. What is the physical ability requirement and the physical intensity of the classes?

Tribal Bellydance is considered a moderate workout. Classes include a mix of gentle, slow movements and more energetic sequences, with stretching, hip and ankle rotations, reaching overhead, and bending forward.

Dancers are encouraged to move at their own pace and within their individual physical abilities. Modifications are always welcome, and there is no expectation to push through pain or discomfort.

If you have injuries or physical concerns, you’re encouraged to chat with Sienna and seek advice from a healthcare professional if needed.

Cost

Classes average $18 per class.  Beginner courses are discounted if you pay in advance (approx $15 per class) or $18 for casual attendance. Discounts apply if you attend 2 or more classes per week. â€‹

Age

This is a supportive space for adult women to move, create, and reconnect with themselves through dance.

Classes are intended for adults, with 18+ preferred, and there is no upper age limit. Women of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

I don’t have much of a belly or I am plus size, can I still dance?

Yes, absolutely. This is a welcoming space for women of all body types. Dance here is about reconnecting with your body through movement, creativity, and shared experience. The focus is on feeling comfortable, confident, and supported, not on how your body looks.

Everybody is welcome, and care, respect, and kindness are part of the culture we dance in.

I am worried I'm too uncoordinated, can I still join?

This is a very common concern, especially for women who are new to dance.

Classes focus on enjoyment and movement first. Everything is taught step by step, and there is no expectation to pick things up straight away or to perform for anyone else.

Learning new movement takes time, and you’re encouraged to go at your own pace. The emphasis is on having fun, being kind to yourself, and enjoying the shared experience of dancing with other women.

What is the approx number of people in the class?

Class participants can range from 2 –12.

I don’t have any dance experience, what class is best for me?

Beginners classes are the best place to start. Everything is taught step by step, with a focus on foundational movements and building confidence.

Courses run for 5–6 weeks and give you time to settle into the style and see if it feels like a good fit. Beginner courses run throughout the year, and returning dancers are welcome.

Are classes suitable for beginners?

The Foundations course and Tribal Grooves classes are suitable for new dancers. No dance experience required.

Are more advanced class available?

For dancers experienced in the Global Caravan Dance format there is an intermediate/advanced class available by invitation only.  If you have Global Caravan Dance dance experience and feel you would like to join this class please contact Sienna to discuss.

If I join a class, does that mean I need to perform???

Performing is never compulsory for any of Sienna’s students. It’s about the dance, connecting with the community and having fun first.  It’s for women to take time out of their busy days and busy lives so they can enjoy moving their bodies in a safe and creative way.  With no pressure!

If a dancer wants to dive deeper, there are more advanced classes and studies available.

What do I wear to class?  Do I need to wear shoes?

Tribal dancers usually dance bare footed.  If you require more support for your feet feel free to wear what is comfortable for you.  Wear clothes that are easy to move and stretch in.  Yoga type clothes are suitable.  Pack a hip scarf for your hips and a flower for your hair (but only if you have one).  You can wear a big skirt if you prefer - please wear pants underneath.  Don't invest too much for your first class, come and check out the vibe and see what you are inspired to adorn yourself with afterwards.
